The viability scan is designed to provide peace of mind from as early as 6 weeks, through to 8 (+ 6 days) weeks of pregnancy. All of our scans are performed by a qualified and registered sonographer.

What can I expect to see during my Viability Scan?

There are many factors which can affect what you will see during your viability scan. Your cycle length is key. You will be asked to input your LMP when booking. Providing you have a regular 28-day cycle and your LMP is 6 weeks ago, we would expect to see a 6 week embryo with a heartbeat.

A shorter cycle may mean that you’re further on in your pregnancy than you expect! If your cycle is irregular or longer than the 28 days, this could mean that you are less than 6 weeks. If this is the case, you may see a 5 – 6 week pregnancy with just a yolk sac present, which is completely normal for that gestation.

Our sonographers will have a conversation with you before your scan to gain a better understanding of your cycle length and to relay any important information. It’s important to consider the factors above when booking your scan.

We are only able to provide scans to persons over the age of 18
The video recording has no audio capability

If you are unsure of your LMP and / or have irregular cycles we advise waiting until at least 7 weeks of pregnancy before attending an appointment. This will give us a better chance to confirm your pregnancy.

Preparing for your viability scan

You must attend your routine scans with the NHS.

You can prepare for your viability scan by ensuring that you are properly hydrated in the 24 hours before your appointment. Please arrive with a full bladder.

It is sometimes necessary during the earlier stages of pregnancy to offer an internal scan. This is because it can be difficult to see the fetus via the abdomen at this stage. Many factors influence this (including hydration). Please ensure you arrive for your scan with a full bladder. As with all of our scans, you have the right to stop the procedure at any time.

Please aim to arrive at least 5 minutes early for your appointment. If you arrive more than 5 minutes late we may need to offer you an alternate appointment time / date. You will be sent an informed consent form 24 hours prior to the appointment. Please try and fill this out prior to arriving at the clinic. It can be useful to have your pregnancy notes with you for our Sonographer to see. As with all scans, we will get a much clearer image if you have a full bladder (but not too full!). Please call and inform us if you require us to make any reasonable adjustments for your visit (i.e. in the case of visual impairment, limited mobility or language barriers, etc).

Hey Baby Leeds is located at 245 Selby Road, Halton Leeds, LS15 7JR. If you are attending your appointment by car, then the best place to park is in the ‘free to park’ 500 space Matalan car park directly behind our clinic. There is then a short ‘walk through‘ from the Matalan car park that leads directly onto Selby road and is right next to our clinic.
